Konverzačné témy: Travelling

By | 20. April 2017

NOTE: If you find this symbol in the text (*) that means it’s a tip for you to mention at your oral exam. You may find it interesting and useful. And remember, not all who wander are lost..:-)

We can take a trip to the wilderness, journey to foreign countries to explore ancient mysteries and secrets of old civilizations. Or we just go to school by bus. All of these examples are being defined as „travelling.“

If you have ever been at the airport, you have surely heard the phrase „business or pleasure?*

* I was wondering why they ask you about this. Turns out that your visa and length of time you are allowed to stay in particular country depends on the reason of your travelling. The other reason is to gather statistical information about travelers.

Business and pleasure are the two main reasons why people travel to other countries.

If you go to another country because of “business” that means that you will probably stay in the country for a shorter period of time. It’s also more likely that you will stay in a more expensive hotel and spend most of the time in the city.

If you’re going to visit some famous landmarks (sights) or just enjoy yourself at the beach, you are there for “pleasure”. Tourists, or in other words travelers who travel for pleasure, are more likely to move from one place to another and explore the cities as well as famous historical landmarks, such as castles, natural wonders, caves, mountains etc.

There are several means of transportation available to you – airports, seaports, railway stations and road transportation like busses and cars that are appropriate for both long and short distances. Of course, each of these types of transportation has some pros and cons.

Plane – exciting, fast, comfortable (If you’re not a tall person), safe and both expensive and cheap – it depends on your ticket, which can cost between 20 and 2000 euros. You need to have a flight ticket, boarding pass and a passport in order to get into the plane. Your luggage is always checked when you go through the customs. After you’re safe and sound in the plane, flight attendants and stewardesses can offer you some meal or refreshment.

Train – relatively fast, cheap and good for environment, BUT often uncomfortable and not very clean. Some people commute by train to school or work every day. Fast trains are perfect for longer distances because they don’t stop at every station.

Ship – safe and frequently used on holiday trips as the only mean of transportation between islands. Of course, you can get sea sick or the ship might just sink, but it’s highly unlikely.

Coach/Bus – cheap, comfortable for reading, but not comfortable for sleeping. Many travelers prefer coach more than the train. If you’re looking for a more exciting bus rides, many agencies offer coach trips to mountains where you can go skiing.

Car – fast but not so safe. You have to drive, which can be challenging if you’re up for many hours on your long distance driving, but depending on road conditions, it can be real pain in the ass or a joyful ride across the country. In order to drive a car you need to be at least 18 years old and have a driving license.

When you’re visiting some historic landmarks (sights) in the town, it is called city sightseeing. Or would you prefer tropical and exotic country by the sea? This is a typical choice for most traveling families. For Slovaks the most popular beaches are in Croatia. People usually book a room in a hotel or bed & breakfast guesthouse for a few days. Some people prefer more exciting way and sleep in their tents.

Let’s see if you know the answers to these questions:

1. What does it mean to go to the country for „business?“
2. If I don’t earn a lot of money and want to travel abroad, which form of transport should I use?
3. Which category of transportation is bad for the environment?
4. Did you understand everything? If not, do not hesitate to ask on our forums!
