NOTE: If you find this symbol in the text (*) that means it’s a tip for you to mention at your oral exam. I personally picked this topic at my oral exam and I’ve rocked it just like YOU WILL!

EDUCATION

Education is one of the most important aspects of human life. Without it we wouldn’t be able to read, speak or brush our teeth properly. There are jobs, which require a certain level of education. You can’t walk out of elementary school and be a surgeon. Without education none of us would know a single word in English, there is no way we would just decide to learn a foreign language when we were ten. Not many people realize this…

Yet there are many examples of “non-educated” people who earned millions and even billions of dollars, made global changes or revolutionized the world and none of these people finished elementary school like Henry Ford (not Indiana Jones nor Han Solo 🙂 ), Abraham Lincoln or Eminem. And there are also people who, thanks to their desire and passion for discovering and learning, created our everyday life a little better.

Some of the most famous dropouts (dropout = person who hasn’t finished the school) are Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Computers and Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, Oprah Winfrey, Mark Zuckeberg, Lady Gaga or John Lennon.

Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard University to start one of the most successful technology companies in history.
Steve Jobs did not finish the Reed College and dropped out at the age of 21. Together with Steve Wozniak he founded Apple Computers.

SYSTEM OF EDUCATION IN SLOVAKIA

In Slovakia school attendance is compulsory for everyone from age 6 to 16. School year starts the first week of September and ends the last week of June. Pre-school kids first go to the kindergarten for 3 years, where they develop their learning capability, social skills, hygiene habits etc.

At the age of 6 they start to attend an elementary school for 9 years. After that, children have 2 choices – they can either go to a grammar school that prepares students for Universities or they can start to attend vocational high school e.g. secondary nursing, business or technical school. Schedule and subjects differ in these types of schools. Students must also take practical lessons – practice. In order to get to any high school, prospective students have to pass the entrance exams.

After 4 years of studying hard (yeah…right) students have to pass school leaving exam – maturita. The next chapter of education is to study at the University, where you attend both compulsory and elective classes. You can finish University studies in 3 years with a Bachelor’s degree, in 5 years with a Master’s degree and in 6 or 8 years (depending on the university) with a PhD degree. Studying is just a one part of student’s life. Students have a few days off – Easter, May days etc. There are also other holidays, such as winter and summer holidays.

EDUCATION IN ENGLAND

In England, school years are divided in tree terms – autumn, spring and summer. It is compulsory for many British students to wear uniforms in school. High school students end the studies with A-level exam, which is similar to our “maturita”.

After school, young peoplen spend their free time doing different sports, playing video games, experimenting with alcohol and cigarettes, reading, working part time jobs and so on. It is the reality that you’ll not read about in the books. There are also illegal activities that many students like to do – cheating on the tests, playing truant, bullying other kids etc.*

* There were some cases in Britain when children got out of control from the authorities and really did anything they want. In one particular school there was a case when 98% of teachers had been verbally abused, one in five had been hit and every third teacher had their property damaged.
