DOES EATING AND DRINKING CUT OUR LIFE EXPECTANCY?
Simple answer to this question is “Sure it does!” Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, said:
So it’s obviously a fact that proper eating habits may have a tremendous impact on our health. On the other hand, eating unhealthy food or drinking too much alcohol is truly bad for our health.
Drinks
It’s a very well-known fact that drinking alcohol is harmful, especially when it’s excessive. In small amounts, however, drinking of alcoholic beverages may have some health benefits. Especially drinking red wine in moderation has been proven to be beneficial for heart and may also protect against certain types of cancer.
Another alcoholic beverage is beer, which is widely consumed among young people and students. Many working people also have a daily routine of opening a bottle of beer after coming home from work. In most cases this habit is not a big problem with regard to one’s health.
However, too much beer, like too much of any food and drink, will make you gain some additional kilograms. Beer belly is not a myth, so if somebody has a tendency to gain weight easily, he/she should avoid drinking beer on a regular basis.
Alcohol, however, is not the only “liquid enemy” of our health. Many so called soft drinks that we drink on a daily basis are full of refined sugar, fructose and various chemical preservatives. These ingredients pose another threat to our health. So instead of cola drinks and “100% fruit juices” we should drink much more clean water or herbal teas.
Food
Food and healthy diet can have even more significant impact on our health and life expectancy. In western world, we eat too much products that contain salt, sugar and white flour. These three ingredients are also called three white poisons and we should eat them in much smaller amounts than we usually do.
1. SALT
Though iodine in salt is beneficial and necessary for our health, eating too much salt has definitely negative effect on our body. If you consume too much salt, you can develop problems with high blood pressure. That’s why we should avoid the typical “party junk food”, such as salty potato chips and other similar snacks.
2. SUGAR
Refined sugar is found almost everywhere – in ketchup, candies, cakes, pastry, canned fruits and many other products. Refined sugar cannot even be considered a food. It is a pure chemical substance extracted from plants, such as sugar cane or beet. It doesn’t contain any nutrients: no proteins, no enzymes, no vitamins or minerals. Eating too much sugar has been linked to an increased risk of diabetes and many other so called lifestyle diseases.
3. WHITE FLOUR
White flour is a flour that has been refined and bleached using different chemicals and in this process it lost a lot of nutrients.
There are hundreds of research studies and websites all over the internet that focus on proper and healthy diet. Some of them may be dubious and controversial, but most of them give us valuable information with regard to improving our health and life expectancy.
